Two weeks went by living in the dark and having to go next door to cook. Though l could tell Mrs Vimbi was beginning to get irritated and the fact that her husband was giving me talking eyes didn’t help.
“Rachel l have a proposition for you” baba Rutendo said. I had gone to beg him to help me then l would pay him somehow.
“Okay what is it?” I asked hopefully.
“Come up with at least money for parts and l will waiver the cost for labour” he says with a grin l didn’t trust.
I couldn’t help the joy that swelled in my entire body. Was this the kind of miracle mum used to tell me about? After all my struggles someone was finally going to help me?
“On one condition” he continues and my hope collapsed. I should have expected such kindness to have strings.
Baba Rutendo’s condition was worse than the plumbers. For as long as he was working on the house wiring his labour was to be paid in kind. He wanted 'The two beasts with one back' kind of payment. I left his house in misery and cried all night in the dark. Why was this man doing this? Wasn’t he the very person who came with his family to church and acted all holy?
The fates however decided to twist my arm. That night thugs came and stole some gardening equipment and other old stuff in the shed. Fortunately my mother had installed reinforced steel around the house before she died and they couldn’t get into the garage or the house otherwise the situation would have had an entirely different ending.
Our neighbourhood was relatively safe with rare occurrences of break-ins but my house being in the dark made it an easy job. Little did they know
Our neighbourhood was relatively safe with rare occurrences of break-ins but my house being in the dark made it an easy job. Little did they know the equipment they stole was all broken down they pretty much stole junk.
The whole day l thought about what l could do. Living alone was no longer an option. One day more determined thieves could find a way into the house and do what they liked with me. Things were in the toilet for me but l refused to give up without a fight. My mother didn’t teach me to quit. I couldn’t disappoint my mother when she herself had been a lion. The world had told my mother a single woman could not raise a child on her own and succeed but look what happened. She not only succeeded but she excelled at it. And that is exactly what l had to do as well. Excel!
Firstly baba Rutendo and l came to an agreement. If by the end of the month l hadn’t raised his money then he would use my body like how he wanted. Considering my situation I’m sure he thought it was a foregone conclusion. He didn’t take my strength of character into account.
A few days later baba Rutendo started the repairs on electricity.
Secondly the house was not safe on my own so l had to look for someone to rent out the entire house whilst l used one bedroom. It would give me some extra cash and strength in numbers. Luckily l found a nice couple with one child who didn’t mind moving in whilst repairs where underway. Honestly it wasn’t much and every cent would go to paying this man.
My only other option was to get a job. That proved to be more difficult than finding $10 for the plumber. My results were out but with an outstanding balance l couldn’t collect them. With no results l wouldn’t be able to find anything at all.
