The next morning the uncles bundled into Uncle Didmus's Land Cruiser whilst aunty and l followed in her Corolla. It was fun talking to her like this and didn't even notice the two hour journey to Harare stopping once to eat and stretch our legs. I swear these old men joked like they weren't going to dump me on some stranger. At some point the talk came to my marriage and him. I truly didn't want to talk about but Mai Shadreck felt the need to give me a brief bio on who my default husband.
Gift was the second born of the three children and six years my senior (yeah l cringed really badly internally at that info) to my twenty two. His father passed away when he was only twelve and his engineering company was now in the oldest daughter's Penny's hands. Coming back three years ago from abroad Gift didn't stand around and eat his inheritance. No the man put his Doctor's degree to good use and opened three surgeries supermarkets supplied fuel and most recently a car sales.
Simply put the man was loaded up to whazoo and he was stuck with a country bumpkin.
On his personality Mai Shadreck didn't say much only to see and judge for myself. What l will be shown as the wife could be different from the rest of the world.
What was that supposed to mean?
Arriving in Harare we head straight for Borrowdale apparently that’s where Gift stays. I was so nervous l thought for sure l would puke. Having lived in Avondale in what l had thought was luxury since my drunk father had 'some' wealth too l can appreciate that our old house was not really luxurious. Not even a little bit. And that fact alone did not help my stomach to settle.
Borrowdale is known for its opulence and expensive houses but this was another level.
Entering the huge black gate we drove and a parked in front of a huge brick mansion eight other luxury cars already displayed in the driveway. A light skinned woman wearing a maid’s uniform and apron opened for us and directed us to the third lounge where the rest of the family waited.
I thought she meant to say a dining room or something but nope she meant exactly that. We passed two lounges
I thought she meant to say a dining room or something but nope she meant exactly that. We passed two lounges a dining room what looked like a bar coz it had a wall with drinks and a pool table before we got to the third lounge. Let me tell you everything was decorated worthy of the royal palace that’s all l can manage to describe. Why would any single man need so much space and things?
"I'm sure this is to intimidate you because this is a longer route to the lounge" aunty whispers as we walk. Then mission accomplished because l was very intimidated now.
Finally getting to what seems to be a dead end is the third lounge. This one has a two 2seaters two 3seaters and two 1seaters all in a circular shape facing this huge LED screen. Of what l have seen so far this one has simple classy furnishing still expensive but simple. Gift his siblings and mother get up and greet the elders and have the most fake smile when it comes to me Gift actually ignores me altogether much to the elders displeasure but remain silent.
There were eight cars outside all very flashy but l counted three visitors which left five. Dude had more than one car?!
The house the owner the flashy cars and the cream coloured sofas everything reminded of how insignificant l was. It made me feel very rural in my all new peach doek white summer chiffon dress and black sandals. Are these elders crazy thinking of leaving me here? The house alone intimidated me but the owner straight out terrified me.
