Chapter 04

(Bloody Mozambican. "We are taking their money because they don't know what to do with it" Liar. Yes he is lying. He is just trying to find an excuse for his criminal work. He asked me to stay behind when other ladies left. He is not saying anything he is just playing with his black snooker ball)

Me : Ike I'm not going to have sex with those men

Ike : Are you asking me or are you telling me?

Me : No. I'm telling you that I'm not going to do it.

Ike : Why?

Me : Because I'm a virgin and I'm saving myself for a good guy. Not those men

(He laughs and shakes his head)

Ike : What are you? Mary from the Bible?

Me : Maybe

Ike : I see. I see that you are getting really comfortable now with disrespecting me. How long have you known me for? 2 seconds?

(I'm not going to answer that)

Ike : Why are you here?

Me : To find work so that I can make money to go to school.

Ike : Nice

Me : Sir I don't want to do this. Can you give me something else to do? I can clean I can cook… I can do anything else but except this.

Ike : I don't have anything else to give you

Me : Then let me go!

(He looks at me with those big eyes. I don't know how that was possible but his eyes looked exactly like mine. Now I understand why people think I'm from Mozambique)

Me : Ok I'm sorry

Ike : I'll find you something else soon but for now you have to do this one. You don't have to sleep with those men but you need to find another way to entertain them. I don't know how you are going to do it but when you get back here after your shift I need my money. No excuses

Me : I don't know these things Ike

Ike : Blue I don't care!! You can leave now. We are done here

(I grab my phone and head to the door)

Ike : Is Selina your mother?

Me : My mother died four years ago

(I answer him without even turning around to look at him)

Ike : Your father?

Me : Somewhere in Mpumalanga. Working.

Ike : Why is he not taking you to school?

(That is none of your business Ike)

Me : I don't know

Ike : If you work hard you will go to school Blue and I'm here to help you. It's all in your hands

Me : Right

Ike : Selina is waiting for you outside

Me : Bye

Ike : Wait. Can you drive?

Me : No

Ike : I want you to learn. I'll pay for it

Me : For what in return?

Ike : Nothing for now

Me : Bye Mr Muianga

Ike : Goodnight Blue

(I walk out. Selina is leaning on the wall smoking. It's busy here now. Drunk people are all around. Men are trying to touch me)

Selina : Don't you dare touch her. Ngizokugijimisa ngecici nou kuchitheke ama popcorn. Futsek!!

(Thank God they are walking away from me. Thanks to Selina)

Selina : Freedom are you Ok?

Me : Yes. Thanks

Selina : This Gauteng. You can't be weak Freedom. You need to learn to stand up for yourself

Me : Ok

Selina : Come let's go. Did you get the job?

Me : Yes.. I guess I… I guess I did.

(It's scary here. I'm busy watching my back and looking at everyone who passes next to me. Selina notices that I'm scared. She holds my hand)

Selina : Now listen. You can't tell Ndondoyethu about this. Tell him that you got a job at the restaurant or somewhere but don't tell him the truth. Do you understand me?

Me : Ye…Yes.

Selina : That's my girl. Go in. I need some beer. I'll see you guys now

Me : Ok Aunty

(I went to our flat and Ndondoyethu is lying in bed reading a book)

Me : Ndondo

Ndondoyethu : Where have you been?

Me : Uhmmm… I was. I was with some lady who was helping me to prepare myself for my interview that is tomorrow at the restaurant.

Ndondoyethu : That's great. I also got a job. You see this man next door? He owns a Shisanyama in Tembisa so he gave me a job. I'm moving to Tembisa tomorrow.

Me : Thembisa? Why? Ndondo you can't leave me here

Ndondoyethu : Because I'll be working the night shift. My shift finishes at 05h00am and it starts at 18h00. Freedom look

Ndondoyethu : Because I'll be working the night shift. My shift finishes at 05h00am and it starts at 18h00. Freedom look I just need to settle in first and after a week or two you can move to Thembisa with me

Me : Are you going to rent a room?

Ndondoyethu : Yes. At the back of his house. There are rooms there but only for people who are working for him

Me : That man next door owns a Shisanyama? Then what is he doing in this place?

Ndondoyethu : Men love this place

Me : But Ndondo you can't leave me. Not now

Ndondoyethu : Give me a week. After a week you can move in with me. I just want to see if we will be able to stay there on our own

(I sigh)

Me : Alright. I get it

Ndondoyethu : I want us to work and save money. I want you to go to the university. You will go first

(I laugh)

Me : What about you?

Ndondoyethu : We can't go at the same time. We are working towards your future and as soon as you get a job we work on mine. Do we have a deal?

Me : Deal

Ndondoyethu : I want us to go away Freedom. Far away from here… Anyway look what I found.

Me : A book?

Ndondoyethu : Not just any book. It speaks about Ryblodinia. Apparently there is no cure and they suspect that it's a disease that comes from animals

Me : Really?

Ndondoyethu : Yes. I'll leave this book for you and when you come to Tembisa you can bring it

Me : Wow. This is interesting

Ndondoyethu : What is this?

(Oh Ndondo. Why do you question everything?)

Me : Oh that phone…. Aunt Selina took it from someone who was owing her money

Ndondoyethu : This place changed her a lot. She used to be so soft but now? I don't even recognize her anymore

Me : I just pray that this place doesn't change us Ndondoyethu.

Ndondoyethu : I know it won't change me and I trust you Blue. Don't allow it to change you

(I want to cry now)

Me : I'll try my best Ndondo

Ndondoyethu : Come here

(He squeezes me into his arms and for a moment all my worries disappear . I'm going to miss him but soon we are going to be together again)

Me : I love you bro

Ndondoyethu : I love you too Blue

(I hate lying to him but I don't have a choice. Again I feel I'm locked up somewhere and I can't move or breathe. A step forward feels like 10 steps back. It feels like where I'm heading it is dark and scary. How do I stop myself from going there. I feel like I'm in too deep already)
